The field of Homeland Security, Law Enforcement, Firefighting, and Related Protective Services includes many different jobs that are dedicated to maintaining order, and protecting both people and property, often in the public sector. Each branch of the field includes jobs with different kinds of duties. Homeland Security, for instance, includes Transportation Security Screeners, who are part of the security team at airports and other travel hubs. Their duties often include inspecting luggage, operating different kinds of security equipment like x-ray machines, and making sure that passengers have the right tickets and identification. Law Enforcement includes police officers and corrections officers. Police Officers make sure that laws are being followed, write tickets for violations, patrol certain areas, and respond to emergency calls. Corrections Officers, on the other hand, work in jails and prisons to make sure the rules and regulations of those institutions are being followed by supervising inmates. Firefighters respond to emergency calls, rescue people in distress and put out fires. They also maintain the equipment to do these things, and regularly conduct practice drills so they are ready when emergency calls come in. Finally, Security Guards and Private Investigators perform similar duties as police officers and detectives, but may work for private organizations or individuals. Security guards may protect property from theft or limit access to a given area; they can work in a variety of settings, including stores, museums, and office buildings. Private investigators may interview people or verify information for their clients. | ![]()
